• Certification and Testing: Both the sawhorses and the plank must be certified as "scaffold grade" or equivalent and tested to support specific loads. Look for official stamps (e.g., "OSHA", "ANSI A10.8", "CSA") on the equipment indicating compliance.
• Support Capacity: Scaffold components and their support devices (the sawhorses) must be capable of supporting at least four times the maximum intended load (including the weight of the plank, user(s), and tools/materials).
• Plank Specifications:
  • Width: The working platform must be at least 18 inches wide to prevent falls.
  • Overlap: Planks 10 feet or less require a minimum 6-inch and maximum 12-inch overlap on their supports. Planks longer than 10 feet require a minimum 6-inch and maximum 18-inch overlap.
  • Securing: The plank must be securely fastened to the sawhorse supports to prevent lateral (side-to-side) movement or accidental displacement.
  • Condition: All planks must be inspected before each use. Do not use bent, cracked, or damaged parts. A "competent person" should review any damage to determine if the plank can be used.
• Foundation: The sawhorse supports must rest on a stable and level surface capable of supporting the imposed load. Unstable objects like boxes or loose bricks are not a safe base.
• Guardrails/Fall Protection: If the platform height is more than 6 feet (in most jurisdictions), additional fall protection, such as guardrails with midrails and toeboards, may be required along open sides and ends of the platform.
